After our unique experiences at our 10th wedding anniversary and encounters with the firefighters at the Mohonk Mountain Lodge at our 20th wedding anniversary, we sought a more calm location for our 30th wedding anniversary and headed to Key West, Florida. Picked the Southmost Inn to stay at. There were a couple of reasons we knew of and one we would learn later. The first reason is the price was reasonable and available during Spring Break. The second reason is the inn was a block from Duval Street. The third reason is the inn was adults only which seemed to suggest some of the excesses of Key West would not permeate the inn.
The reason we did not know was the inn was owned by a family of foreign descent and to understand why that is important, let me tell you a joke. In Europe, it is important to understand the what country you are driving in to understand how drivers perceive traffic laws. In France, everything is permitted except that which is prohibited. In Germany, everything is prohibited except that which is permitted. In Italy, everything is permitted and especially those things which are prohibited. Southmost Inn was owned by a German family.
There were rules associated with the Inn that ensured everyone got a good night’s sleep. Eileen and I were fans of these rules. Break the rules and your stay at the Inn would come to an abrupt end. We could walk to Duval Street, enjoy the sunset, acts on the water walk, the bars, and the beautiful sunsets. We could then walk back and go to bed in a quiet retreat. We enjoyed staying at the Southmost Inn.
